About Us

Kickstart SLC is a service offered to students at Champlain-St. Lawrence who wish to start their own business, learn more about start-ups and expand their business network with the help of mentors. It is part of the college's global student offer of services to promote entrepreneurship.

This project was initiated by Business teachers in the PW Sims Business Department and supported by our Dean of Studies and Campus Director, M. Edward Beryman.

Karina Brassard LL.B, MBA, has been involved in Entrepreneurship at different levels. Recipient of different awards as an entrepreneur and business owner, she has maintained her involvement in the community by helping others start their own business. Her many years of teaching in business combined with her hands-on experience as an Entrepreneur make for a passionate profile to help students develop their own entrepreneurial skills.

Thom Skinner CPA, CA, has been teaching at St.Lawrence for many years. He serves on the Board of Directors of l'Aéroport international Jean-Lesage de Québec (YQB) and was part of the comité d’investissement Innovation of Desjardins Capital (a division of Desjardins) until 2019. He spent most of his career as a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and business advisor for a variety of firms in different countries. He is a sound listener and has an impressive wealth of experience to share with students.

Raymond Déry CPA, CA (1980-2007), has also contributed to Kickstart SLC as a coach, mentor and an advisor. Students can count on his many years of experience both as a business teacher, and consultant.  In his previous career, he was in charge of advising and managing start-ups or businesses with high growth potential.  His understanding of the business world and creative ideas will certainly inspire students to think before taking action. See linkedin profile for more information.

Kickstart SLC can also count on the generous sponsorship of the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) to support financial start-up needs. Many other mentors from different backgrounds have also volunteered to exchange with students and to help them progress in their business idea. Workshops, coaching and visits from our team of mentors and other professionals are organized through the year to support student projects.
